Using a Short Video to Pre-Sell Tax-Planning Prospects
A lot of firm owners skip video entirely, assuming it needs professional production to be worth doing. For a pre-sell message, that assumption is backwards — a smartphone recording of you, speaking directly to the prospect, does more trust-building for a high-ticket advisory sale than a polished, generic explainer video would.
Why video specifically, for this sale
A tax-planning engagement is a relationship, not a transaction. The prospect isn’t just evaluating your service — they’re evaluating whether they want to work directly with you (or your firm) for the next year. A short video puts a face, a voice, and a tone to the firm before the first call, which a written message alone can’t fully do. It’s a trust signal suited to exactly the kind of sale this is.
What the video needs to cover
Keep it short — this is a pre-sell, not a webinar. Roughly five to seven minutes is enough to cover:
- Who this is for — a quick description of the kind of business owner or situation this applies to, so the right prospects lean in and the wrong-fit ones self-select out.
- The prep vs. planning distinction — briefly restate what proactive planning is and isn’t, since this is the single biggest source of confusion documented in the market research (see why marketing attracts the wrong prospect).
- What to expect on the call — format, rough length, and that it’s a conversation, not a pitch — this alone reduces the anxiety that drives some no-shows.
- A light credibility marker — briefly, why you focus on this work — without turning the video into a résumé recitation.
What to leave out
- Specific tax strategies or numbers tied to the prospect’s own situation — that’s the consultation’s job, not the pre-sell’s, and straying into specific advice here risks giving guidance before you actually know the prospect’s circumstances.
- Heavy production value. A clear, well-lit smartphone video that says the right things outperforms a polished video that doesn’t.
- A hard sales pitch. The video’s job is to make the call worth having — not to close the engagement before the call even happens.
Where it fits in the sequence
The video (or its written equivalent — see educating prospects) goes out immediately after a prospect opts in, before any consultation is booked or confirmed. Sent any later, it loses most of its value — the whole point is resolving confusion and building trust before the prospect commits calendar time.
