Building a Client-Acquisition Funnel for a Tax-Planning Firm
Everything covered elsewhere on this site — pre-selling, qualification, the consultation funnel — describes what a strong client-acquisition system needs to do. This hub is about a separate decision: how you actually build it.
Implementation is its own decision, separate from strategy
Understanding that you need a pre-sell message, a qualification step, and a booking flow doesn’t tell you whether to build each piece yourself with off-the-shelf tools, hire someone to build it for you, or start from an existing template designed to do most of this out of the box. That’s a distinct choice, with its own tradeoffs, and it deserves its own deliberate decision rather than defaulting to whichever option you happen to think of first.
Three paths
1. DIY / stitched-together tools. Assemble your own funnel from a landing-page builder, a separate scheduling tool, an email platform, and your own writing. Maximum control and customization; the most time investment, and the most points where something can be configured incorrectly or left disconnected from the rest of the system.
2. Hire an agency. Pay a marketing or funnel-building agency (several serve the tax/accounting space specifically) to design and build the system for you. Less of your own time required; higher cost, longer lead time to launch, and variable quality depending on the agency’s actual experience with advisory (not just transactional) sales.
3. Done-for-you template system. Start from a pre-built funnel template — pages, sequences, and structure already built — and adapt it to your firm. Fast to launch and low cost relative to an agency build; less customization out of the box, and (worth being direct about) generally not built specifically for your industry, so some adaptation work is still required.
Decision factors
| Factor | Favors DIY | Favors Agency | Favors Done-For-You |
|---|---|---|---|
| Available time | Only if you have real bandwidth | Low time cost to you | Low time cost, faster than agency |
| Budget | Lowest tool cost, highest time cost | Highest dollar cost | Low dollar cost |
| Technical comfort | Needed | Not needed | Minimal, guided setup |
| Need for speed | Slowest to launch | Moderate (agency timelines vary) | Fastest to launch |
| Customization needs | Full control | High, if agency is skilled | Moderate — needs adaptation |
A factor specific to this avatar — seasonal time availability — matters enough to warrant its own page: see DIY vs. done-for-you for the full comparison, including why the answer often depends on what time of year you’re making this decision.
Where this goes
Once you’ve picked a path, DIY vs. agency vs. done-for-you covers the tradeoffs in more depth, and the 7-Minute Client Conversion Engine covers one specific done-for-you option in detail — including an honest look at what it is and isn’t built for.
Build it yourself, or start with the complete system
Everything above can be built piece by piece. Or you can start from the 7-Minute Client Conversion Engine™, which packages the mechanism into one implementation kit.
